It was 1:00 pm on March 15, 1877 when the first test begins between Australia and England. The 1877 Australia v England series was the first ever Test cricket tour of Australia by the English cricket team. The tour was from 15 March 1877 to 4 April 1877 in which the test series was drawn 1-1. Australia played under the captain Dave Gregory while England played under James Lillywhite. The English team is sometimes referred to as James Lillywhite's XI. This series is not considered to be part of The Ashes. The first test won by Australia with 45 run win. The second test won by England with 4 wkts win.

The first test was dominated by Charles Bannerman of Australia Who scored 67% of the runs in first innings. He also scored the first single in test history on his way to the highest test score by an australian on debut. He had scored 27 by lunch and the team score was 42 for the loss of three wickets. Bannerman increased his scoring rate after interval by which time crowd has increased to 4,500. By the close of play, he had moved up to 126 and combined Australia had made 166 for six. On the second day, Bannerman took his score to 165 before he was forced to retire hurt. The Australian innings promptly collapsed to 245 all out. Bannerman had scored 67% of the runs in an innings which still is a record.

International Cricket Match

The England XI first innings was opened by Jupp and Selby and the batsmen amused the crowd by running quick singles after tapping the ball a few yards. By close of play at 5 p.m., England had made 109 for the loss of four wickets, Jupp having contributed 54 not out, after dislodging a bail with his foot and being given not out. On third day, play started early with an estimated crowd of 12,000 spectators in attendance. The visitors fell 49 short of their colonial opponents.When Australia batted again, Bannerman opened the innings but Australia has been reduced to 83 for nine. On the fourth afternoon, Australia extended the lead to 153 and bundled out the opposition to 108 all out and thus won by 45 runs. The match was played on Melbourne Cricket Ground.

*Allen Hill took the first wicket in Test cricket.
*Allen Hill took the first ever catch in Test cricket.
*Billy Midwinter took the first ever 5 wicket haul in Test cricket.
*Jack Blackham took the first ever catch by a wicket-keeper and effected the first ever stumping in Test cricket.
*Australia became the first team to win a Test match.
